Keeping Pests & Insects Out of Your Hot Tub

pests, insects, and mice around a hot tubThere’s nothing worse than dealing with pesky critters all over your hot tub.

Unfortunately having a hot tub with nice, warm water can attract unwanted visitors especially once temperatures start dropping and critters look for shelter. From ants to mice, once they settle into your hot tub, they can do a lot of damage. They can affect your wires, insulation, plumbing, and more. So rather than wait for pests to make a home in your hot tub, we recommend taking preventative methods.

Properly Cover Your Hot Tub

One easy way to keep them away is to have a properly functioning hot tub cover. You want it to be strong, sturdy, and secure. Cover it right away after every use. Make sure to inspect your hot tub cover once every so often. If you see wear and tear, it may even be time for a hot tub cover replacement. This is especially apparent if it starts to sag or if it feels much heavier than before.

Keep Your Water Clean

Keeping your water clean not only keeps pests away, but it’s also safest for yourself and your guests whenever they’re using the hot tub. Water that is improperly balanced or smells foul can attract pests (including frogs!). The worse the water, the easier it is for critters to find. We recommend marking consistent reminders in your calendar to test your water.

Remove Food After Hot Tub Use

Whenever you have food in or near your hot tub, it needs to be properly disposed of or put away. Any leftovers are sure to attract ants, raccoons, and rats. They might also chew up parts of your hot tub in addition to the food. The last thing a hot tub owner wants to wake up to is a swarm of pests. Make sure you and your guests are extremely diligent about cleaning up.

Regularly Use Your Hot Tub

By keeping that area active, it discourages critters from making it their home. Insects such as mosquitoes may also be hovering in the area so don’t forget to find the right repellent for you. Your hot tub is perfect all year-round, and is the perfect place to host parties. The more often you use it, the more likely you are to notice if something is amiss.

Inspect Your Hot Tub

This is a regular maintenance task, but it also helps keeps pests to a minimum. Check to make sure your hot tub is in top notch condition. If there are any cracks or leaks, you’ll want to address them as soon as possible. Don’t forget to inspect your hot tub cover and cabinet. Similar to checking for your water, you’ll want to mark a consistent reminder in your calendar for your overall hot tub.

Don’t let pests or insects ruin your next hot tub gathering! Use as many preventative methods as possible; there’s no such thing as too much!
