How To Spring Clean Your Hot Tub

OUR HOT TUB BLOG

‘Tis the season for Spring cleaning! Make sure your hot tub is on the list!

The last snows of the winter have melted, trees are quickly springing up and flowers are beginning to bloom. The Spring season is coming to town which means one thing: it’s time to spring clean your hot tub!

Even though another project on the to-do list sounds completely unwanted, Spring may just be the best time of the year to deep clean your hot tub! The sun is out (but it’s not nearly as hot as summer) and if you’re already cleaning the rest of your home, what’s one hot tub to add to the list? To help save you time from searching everywhere about just how to do it, we created a simple step-by-step guide below.

Why Should You Clean the Hot Tub?

You may be asking why you should be deep cleaning in the first place. As said before, Spring might just be the best time for cleaning. First, if you’ve had a particularly cold winter, even too cold for hot tubbing outdoors, or if you’ve been away on vacation, the hot tub may not have been in use very much. Since it’s just been sitting there, you’ll definitely want to give it a good clean before filling it back up with fresh water.

In some cases, you might have actually constantly used the hot tub almost every day. The frequent use of the hot tub is also a great reason why it needs a deep scrub. With a constant stream of guests and usage, it’s not uncommon for bacteria, dust, and other particles to build up. To avoid it from becoming a health hazard, cleaning is an absolute must.

And, no matter the usage of your hot tub you’ll want to keep it clean just for the sole purpose of overall performance. By keeping your tub sparkling clean, it improves its functions, saving more energy, and saving you money in the long run. So let’s dive right in!

Spring Cleaning Guide

Step 1: Drain the hot tub
First, make sure to turn off the power to prevent your hot tub’s motor from being damaged. Next, use a drain plug or sump pump to remove all water from the tub’s reservoir. Keep in mind that this task should be performed based on the direction that comes with the hot tub.

Step 2: Clean the tub cover
The exterior of a hot tub cover is often exposed to damaging elements such as dirt, dust, sap, and sunlight. Thus, it is necessary to clean this part carefully with a vinyl protectant and a damp sponge or cloth, then rinse it with warm water.

Step 3: Clean the filter
After unfastening or unscrewing the filters, you should use a high-pressure hose to spray them to remove all residues. Do not clean these parts with a brush since you can actually trap the dirt and debris further inside. Then, scrub the interior part with a water or chlorine solution to remove any organic matter or bacteria such as mold. Lastly, place the filter in an oil-cutting solution for about 1 hour.

Step 4: Clean the surface
First, use a hose to spray down some clean water on the tub’s surface. Then, scrub this area with a sponge or rag and cleaner. In most cases, it is advisable to use acrylic shells since they are resistant to germ aggregation and buildup.

And that’s it. You’re all set!

Overall, hot tubs are great places to help you and your family relax, clear the mind, and offer relief from pains by alleviating overworked muscles or speeding up the recovery from an injury. Spring is here and now it’s time to clean up the hot tub to enjoy it for more seasons to come.
